The 2011 Douglass Land Reunion: Some Preliminary Planning Notes

Soon, we will have more information on the Douglass Reunion Cruise for next May, but work is also progressing on the Land Reunion planned for the Douglass Alumni on July 1, 2, and 3, 2011.

There will be similar events to the previous reunions, but they will all take on a different meaning, relating to the location.

For folks in the Riverview neighborhood, it will be a return to our home roots.

The "Meet and Greet" portion of the Land Reunion, traditionally held in one of the Meadowview Event Rooms, will instead, be held in the Douglass Community Room of the V.O. Dobbins, Sr. Complex. Music will be provided to keep folks in a festive mood. If you remember the old sock-hops of the past in the Douglass Gym, this will be a trip back home.

Peliminary discussion by the Events Committee of the Douglass Alumni Board, includes a golf tournament planned for Saturday morning, July 2nd. Discussions have it being played at Meadowview. Golfers can indeed sign up right now, if they want to. Just contact Don Hickman (dhick007@aol.com) or Frank Horton (flhortonjr@gmail.com).

Field Day activities will continue in the Douglass Ballfield, this time with activities for young people and the kids. Plans are to have some inflatables for the kids. Vendors will once again, provide some good food to eat.

There won't be a "banquet" as we have known it. Instead, there will be a dress-up dinner reception, without most of the speeches that lengthened banquets of the past. Music will continue for folks who want to "dance the night away." This event will also be held in the Douglass Community Room of the V.O. Dobbins, Sr. Complex.

Discussions have included also keeping the Memorial Service on Sunday, most likely to be held in the Douglass Community Room. The format will probably stay the same, although a final decision hasn't been finalized yet.

Events that will cost, will be the "Meet and Greet," the golf tournament, and the reception, but one change will be that those people who want to attend a certain event, can pay just for that event, without having to pay for everything else.

Since the Reunion Souvenir Booklet was quite popular in 2009, there is also planned a souvenir booklet for the 2011 get-together, also with ads that can be purchased. More details on the booklet will come soon.

Keeping the 2011 Land Reunion at the same quality, but also keeping down the operating costs, is a goal of the Events Committee.
